How to Beat the Heat at a Summer Wedding in France

Planning Advice

Practical tips to help couples keep guests comfortable and enjoy a beautiful summer wedding, even during the hottest days in France.

As a wedding planner in the Southwest of France, I’ve had the privilege of organising some truly magical weddings but one of the greatest challenges I encounter is the sudden onset of a heat wave.

Just last year ago, I planned a wedding in a vineyard where the temperature soared to a staggering 48 degrees. For many of my couples, especially those traveling from the UK, a heat wave isn’t something they’re accustomed to. When the thermometer climbs above 35 degrees, the risks, both to comfort and safety, multiply.  So, I’m going to share a few of my top tips to help couples plan a beautiful wedding without letting the heat steal the show.

Offer Shade Options

If your ceremony is outdoors, consider providing parasols for guests and handheld fans for the bridal party. At that 48-degree wedding, even a short speech in direct sunlight became an ordeal. For marquee weddings, keep the space ventilated, fans or misters will be your best friends.

Hydration Stations

Dehydration is a real risk, especially when guests are sipping wine in the sun. Set up fun hydration stations with infused waters, think cucumber, mint, or citrus. Don’t forget hand fans, whether classic paper fans or those little electronic ones with a misting feature.

Build in Breaks

Heat slows everyone down, vendors, staff, even you. Plan for extra breaks so the team can rehydrate and rest. Make sure your staff-to-guest ratio is adequate, more hands on deck means a safer, smoother service.

Choose Heat-Resistant Decor

Think about your flowers, cake, and seating. In that 48-degree heat, even a classic French croquembouche (profiterole tower) collapsed, the caramel literally melted. Opt for sturdy, heat-friendly flowers and avoid metal chairs or anything prone to overheating. Little details like cushioned seating can make all the difference.

Pamper Baskets in the bathrooms

A thoughtful touch goes a long way. In the bathroom, create little pamper baskets: fresh towels, sunscreen, deodorant, blotting papers—tiny refreshes that let guests stay cool and comfortable.

Plan for All Ages

Remember your elderly guests and the little ones. They’ll need extra breaks from the sun so consider a shaded lounge area or a cool-down station where they can relax.

When planned with care, a summer wedding in Southwest France can still be an absolute dream. By thinking ahead and incorporating these heatwave tips, you ensure your guests stay safe and the day stays magical.
